I was delighted to receive my May issue of Idaho Magazine compliments of Steve Bunk, Managing Editor. Mr. Bunk had contacted me weeks earlier about an article that would appear in the publication about the Wilson Creek Frozen 50K race that was run in January.
I turned the pages and quickly recognized some of the photos that I had taken on race day. It had been a cold morning that day, with temperatures dipping to about -5, but each runner was determined to complete the race course. I began reading and learned about Caire Gudmundsen who would participate in the 10-mile race that morning. She told her story about her race morning preparation complete with an early risotto breakfast. As the story developed, readers learned about the challenges that Ms. Gudmundsen would face: cold conditions, traction devices not staying in place on her running shoes, and the dreaded stomach issues that sometimes make their presence known on race day. It was a nice reminder of that day in January when things did not go as planned, but still brought a smile to our author's face.
I hope to be there once again on race day in January 2014 I hope to again capture more of those smiling faces as a new batch of runners tackle the Wilson Creek course. At that time we're sure to hear more great stories about this great winter race.
