Every year when May rolls around, I am first reminded of how many years have passed since I graduated from high school. When I finally get over that shock, I think about the excitement that the graduates must be feeling at the thought of finishing up their high school years. Many of us are former graduates ourselves so it makes sense that we can be nostalgic about that time in our lives and feel like we know what it must be like for the graduates.
Because Tempus Photo Design is a low volume portrait studio (we prefer to call it boutique), we get to know our high school seniors and can celebrate this great milestone. This past year we had to opportunity to photograph Dante King of Vallivue High School in Caldwell, Idaho. When we were first contacted about photographing Dante, it was one of those nostalgic moments.
I have personally known Dante since he was in middle school. Dante’s mother, Amy, and I run in similar circles. I mean that literally. We are both runners and we have spent time over the years getting to know each other. One evening a group of runners got together to run in the evening moonlight and Dante came along to put in a few miles.
Dante was an enthusiastic teenager, just excited to be out hanging out with other runners. He had a big smile on his face, and seemed at ease around a bunch of adult runners.
Flash forward a few years, and here’s Dante ready for his senior year of high school. Seeing him again brought a smile to my face. He was still the same smiling, enthusiastic person I had met years ago, even if he had outgrown me by a good 6 inches or more.
Here’s a few of Dante’s senior portraits.
As wonderful as natural colors were, Dante had wanted to be photographed after the leaves changed color. We were a bit early for the fall colors, but I did some creative editing and gave the leaves the fall color that Dante wanted. What the senior wants, the senior gets!
At one point during our afternoon I showed Dante a few unedited images from behind the camera. He smiled and said that he hadn’t really felt like a senior until that moment when he saw his senior photos. What great validation for a photographer!
I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to be a part of Dante’s senior year. And now that the year is coming to a close, the next chapter will begin with great anticipation and excitement. So here’s a final look at Dante: arms wide open, ready to embrace the future.
