I love backdrops, but I avoid shopping for new ones unless I have a specific use for something new. While planning for an upcoming senior session, I didn't feel like I had a the right backdrop color for the outfits that were going to be worn on the day of the shoot. So...a'shopping I did go.
I picked out Savage Universal Blue Jean.
Blue Jean was the perfect color for a senior session that includes, what else: blue jeans. The backdrop can be photographed with direct light for a brighter blue color, or fall into shadow for a deeper blue tone.
By coincidence, I happened to be wearing blue when I received the backdrop, so I did a quick test shoot to see how the colors would look. A simple umbrella with reflector for fill was used to get the shot, so it was a quick setup.
I had a headshot scheduled for later in the week, with local author T. R. Schaap (The Hiding Door) as he was putting the finishing touches on his new book. Since he needed a new headshot for his book jacket, an updated headshot was needed to meet his deadline.
The setup included 1 light with reflector for Tim, and a second light with grid to create a narrow spotlight for the light falling onto the backdrop.
I got some final shots with a couple of teenagers who were waiting in the other room during the headshots. Getting them to sit still for a few minutes was a challenge, but worth it to get a few more samples on the Blue Jean backdrop.
Blue Jean is a great addition to the assortment of backdrop colors available. The color works great for senior pictures, professional headshots, or general portraits. If you love this color, we'll make sure that we incorporate it into your next session.
