While photographing at the Wild Idaho Endurance Runs, I had a few encounters with runner Andy Owens. Andy had requested that I try to take a photo of the logo on his shirt. With each pass that Andy made along the course where I was positioned, I fired off a few shots trying to get that "just right" photograph of Andy and the logo on his shirt. None seemed to fit the bill. I had several photos that seemed to address the basic request: Andy and shirt logo, but still, none seemed quite right.
When Andy finished his 50 mile race, he finally stood still long enough to capture this image:
Not only do we see the logo on the shirt, but we also see a proud 50 mile finisher with the "coveted finisher's bat", as race director Ben Blessing would say.
After some time reviewing the other photos of Andy on the course, I decided that I was partial to a different photo of Andy.
The photo features the shirt logo and Andy, or at least part of him. While not a traditional photograph of Andy and his shirt, neither is an ultramarathon. Whether you like the first or the second photograph, Andy finished what he set out to accomplish: finishing a difficult 50 mile race. For my part I was successful in taking a photo of a runner and his shirt.
