I had an opportunity to photograph a maternity session recently. While I'm not generally a maternity photographer, I decided to inject a bit of my own style to the session.
When Natalliee and I first started planning her session, she was in her first trimester, so we had time to plan since we needed a visible baby bump. After talking with Natalliee, we planned on a tulle look that included some darker tones so that the lighter skin tones pull the focus in. would With that plan in mind, I was ready to go when Natalliee arrived. Natalliee asked if we could add a few shots of another outfit so we started with a casual look.
The tulle skirt for the second series was one that I have used in the past. I used some of the tulle for a tube top look so that Natallie's stomach would be visible to emphasize her pregnancy. I still kept the same 2-light setup for a moody look with Natallie's skin tone helping to lead the eye to Natallie and since she has such a great natural smile, I made sure I photographed Natallie with a smile on her face.
In addition to the smiling shots, we also added some with a serious expression.
One of the final series of images that we worked on together was photographed from above with Natallie in a striking pose that fits into the maternity boudoir category.
There are many ideas of what maternity photography is, and it was such a fun experience working with Natalliee to photograph her in this style. There is no right or wrong, it's just a matter of what fits the look that we plan for. That's why the planning is such an important step. I do love to surprise my clients with their finished images, but I also want to make sure that I am going to produce images that they will love.
If you are interested in updating your portrait or have an idea for something fun, please message me and I would be happy to discuss how we can bring this idea to life and create something special that you will absolutely love.
