I am a music theater fan, so of course when it was announced that WICKED would be coming to the area, I marked it on my calendar and made plans to attend. Eventually, the day arrived to check out the show.
It wasn't my first time seeing it, but each time, I discover new things to love about it. Like most musical theater, it exists in layers. It's the story (including the actor dialogue), and a layer of music and lyrics. Follow that up with the sets and costumes (complete with hair and makeup) and finish it up with the lighting.
Photographing a session involves many of the same characteristics of the theater production including the overall set design, wardrobe, makeup and lighting. These are the same types of things that are included in every session.
Each session includes some planning. This is helpful for you and for me because it ensures the success of your session and makes the actual shoot day less stressful. Here are some of the things we will be planning before the session:
1. Type of session - The initial conversation includes discussing the type of session. Each type of session can be very different and knowing the type helps to start planning the overall goals for the day.
2. Location - Whether it's a studio session, or on-location, each of the elements of the location have to be planned. Studio sessions require coordinating backdrops with wardrobe to create a cohesive look with complimentary colors. Outdoor locations require scouting and selecting a natural backdrop that compliments the subject being photographed.
3. Wardrobe and makeup. Wardrobe doesn't have to be expensive, but it does have to be well thought out. It can be your regular daily clothes; but it's important to have complimentary colors with some variety for the final image selection. If you decide on a stylized session, wardrobe becomes even more important. Makeup can be different than daily makeup. The goal is for the makeup to accentuate the face without being a distraction.
4. Lighting. The lighting setup is an area that people often overlook. It's not just a matter of making sure that there is light available, but also the quality of the light. It is a soft natural light, or light that is hard in contrast. What's the direction of the light? Does the light have a color cast? The lighting sets the mood.
Inspiration is everywhere, but I particularly like to find it in things that I already enjoy. Sitting in a dark theater, immersed in the production on stage or on a screen engages the senses and creates a memorable experience. Your photo session should be equally memorable and equally inspired by you and your personality. It isn't just a digital file or a piece of photo paper; it's an experience. So let's plan something special with heirloom quality keepsakes to share with others, or do it just for you.
